Commit... Start Now

In almost two decades in different levels of management and business leadership I have observed a few differences in those who move forward, grow and bring new ideas into reality.

They Commit and then Start Now.

Simple right.. until you think about the thing you have been neglecting or the idea you have shelved for months or years. The person who Commits and Starts Now, is often not more intelligent or gifted than others who freeze or delay. They are simply more willing to embrace the suck of doing something new.

I will write more about this on the blog and other areas in depth for those wanting more. To start I am going to break it down in a way I hope will get you to Commit - Start Now.

  • To Commit one needs to have a grasp of the requirements. This is different to wanting to know the full blow by blow detail of a plan. If you need that then chances are you will not start. In business a good plan gets you started and momentum. Once you have momentum regular review and being agile are a must.

  • Book the start time in your calendar and ask someone to follow you up. This person has to be a great friend or your partner. We don’t get to be snarky at them for following up! And they need to be of the disposition that they will follow you up.

  • Get the resources required at least a fortnight before that date. The reason for this is simple, if you leave it to the date to get what you need for the task you will make starting more difficult.

  • Start Now - get that course or book ordered. Create a file, Pinterest page or document for notes, images and a basic outline of what is required.

  • Once you take the first step, get the next session in quickly. Build momentum and enjoy small wins.

  • Give yourself grace and don’t take yourself too seriously. Have fun! You are not going to be an expert on starting and you don’t want to be. Once you have built some skill you will love the confidence that comes from having pushed through the suck to your new level.

It could be a new habit, hobby, skill or discipline. It may be more rest, pilates or building a garden. Or a business idea or new strategy. Don’t let it wait, Commit and Start Now!
